Having a back up plan – or “Plan B” - is the norm in business enterprises.

But business executives usually enjoy a benefit of their own in the form of what is called ‘limited liability’, meaning business owners and operators can generally not be held responsible for business debts in the absence of fraud or misconduct on their parts.

Personal life, however, is not quite so generous – the buck starts and stops with us, end of story.

If we therefore mess it up, we have only ourselves to blame.

So, while the reality is that a personal Plan B is never likely to be as preferable an outcome as a Plan A, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing to have one.

From a stressbusting™ perspective, a Plan B can be hugely reassuring if there is a particular area of risk to your overall life wellness or security.

Only you will know if and where these risk areas may lie in your life cycle, but they may include e.g. a risk to financial security due to possible job loss, an identifiable risk to your health or possible loss of benefits on a change of government.

A good question to ask yourself is what keeps you awake at night?

In the above cases given by way of example, you would be wise to have a Plan B in place should a worst case scenario materialise.

This could involve e.g. in the above examples (taking each in turn) having alternative self employment options available in the event of job loss, a properly drafted will and/or a trust/life insurance in place to protect the interests of loved ones if anything were to happen to you (we will cover this in greater detail in a separate post) or the full range of interim support offerings to hand for access on short notice should your benefits fall away for any reason.

And this is the thing – Plan B’s needn’t monopolise your life.

Once they are in place, they can then be put away in a ‘mental drawer’ which only needs opened if the risk materialises, thus providing immense stressbusting™ benefits for limited time effort and cost outlay.

So don’t delay in posing the question to yourself as to whether you need a Plan B in any area of your life or just 'hope for the best'.

Instead, have a Plan B in place then move on with comforting pride of peace of mind and forget about it! ☺
