Hello Campers
Perhaps nowhere (with the exception of Police Dogs) can the commitment and dedication of my K9 companions be seen than in the sterling service they provide as Guide Dogs to the blind and partially sighted community.
But here are a few facts readers may not be aware of:-
● guide dogs provide the same wellness and health benefits to their owners as the pet benefits described in my previous post entitled "A Word from Our Hank on Pet Companionship"
● they can come in different breeds (including my own) which are predominately selected on the basis of temperament and adaptability
● they are immensely protective of their owner so should not be approached or distracted while they perform their valuable work; they are, for example, not just trained to stop their owner if danger arises, but also to move them away from some danger, so be careful not to place babies in pushchairs too close
● guide dogs are excluded from many laws preventing other pets from accessing certain public areas; please do not be jealous or upset with this, as it is necessary in the performance of their important function
● it can take one pup up to 2 years at a cost of up to £50,000.00 to be trained; that is almost as much as a full university degree but worth every penny to the lucky owner who they are partnered with
● when they retire, they can suffer detachment anxiety as a result of being separated from their owner (as can their owner).
So a BIG hat's off to our guide dog contingent for lives very well served that we could all do well to take example from - they are, to the blind and partially sighted community, the ultimate StressBusting™ allies, and are a yet further example of pets enhancing the quality of life and wellness of those with whom they come into contact.
