We recently viewed a Holland & Barrett ad on TV communicating detail of their new menopause support campaign.

They say they have trained over 600 individuals to be female "life coaches" to help educate and treat (no doubt at the cost of appropriate treatments!) menopausal symptoms in women of all ages. This is admirable.

The connotation of the ad was clearly being that, with their support and accompanying correct treatment programmes, many days could be better, more enjoyable ones in some way.

But it is important to understand that, regardless of any active menopausal or hormonal symptoms in existence (which, despite H&B's apparent exclusive focus on women, can apply equally to men), a person can rarely feel truly fulfilled and enjoy every single day.

Such an aspiration is simply unrealistic and could end in disappointment - in the same way that energy drinks won't "give you wings" and vitamin supplements won't necessarily make you "yourself, but on a good day".

The human condition, with all its physical, mental and emotional intracacies, simply does not lend itself to feeling tip top every single day.

There will always, as a result, be days when we feel less ourselves than others; and it is important not to feel as a result of any advertising that this is in some way not okay or something to be "corrected".

Sometimes we can't put our fingers on it, but then the next day feel fine.

This is an integral part of life's tapestry and self learning curve, and should be celebrated, not frowned upon or worried about.

After all, how could we enjoy the ups life provides without experiencing the downs?!

Treating the emotional passage of time as a series of rolling valleys with peaks and troughs, rather than a single mountain to be climbed with a one way uphill trajectory, is essential to understanding the human condition and remaining positive regardless of any particular mood.

Of course, if feeling down and depressed becomes the norm, not the exception, then professional help should be sought as soon as possible, but the odd bad hair day helps everyone along their journey and need not be cause for immediate concern.
