Overcoming addiction is an extremely difficult journey involving many ups and downs, and while there are many generic self help tips out there, it often requires an approach designed by the individual which is unique to the individual.

In this respect, the value of physical reminders should not be overlooked.

Physical reminders serve as visual anchors that help individuals stay focused on their recovery goals.

They provide a constant, tangible presence in the midst of daily life, reminding those in recovery of their commitment to halting their addiction.

Objects with personal significance can hold powerful symbolic meaning. Individuals often choose physical reminders that represent their journey, their strength, or the reasons they are committed to overcoming addiction.

Physical reminders offer motivation and encouragement. They can be daily sources of inspiration, reminding individuals of the progress they've made and the hurdles they've overcome.

A physical reminder, like a piece of jewelry or a small keepsake, encourages mindfulness and awareness, prompting individuals to pause, reflect, and stay connected to their recovery journey.

Having a tangible reminder can serve as a form of personal accountability. It is a constant presence, holding individuals responsible for their commitment.

As such, they can act as healthy coping mechanisms. In moments of stress or temptation, holding or looking at the reminder can provide comfort and strength, helping individuals resist the urge to relapse.

Incorporating physical reminders into one's recovery plan can be a way of setting and achieving smaller, tangible goals. It's a way of marking key milestones and both acknowledging as well as celebrating achievements along the way.

By way of real time example, the squidgy toy mouse in the photograph was used specifically by an individual to help them stop smoking. This toy belonged to their young baby whose birth was a major motivating factor in their choice to stop. The individual resolved to keep their cigarettes in the same coat pocket as their cigarettes at all times. This meant that every single time they reached for a cigarette, they felt the mouse and were reminded of all the very good reasons they had elected to stop. This technique along with others and a considerable dosage of will power, resulted in the individual in question successfully quitting completely over the course of a few weeks.
