We heard that there used to be a doctor in the region we lived who patients of the surgery in question referred to jokingly as "Sicknote". The apparent reason for this was that whenever a patient came through their consulting room door, before they even had the chance to take a seat and without even looking up, said doctor would ask them if they wanted a sicknote, as that were seemingly why most patients came to see them 🙈🙊.

While this was reported as a source of continued patient amusement for some time, it nevertheless raises a couple of serious points.

Firstly, that it is always worth making sure to be completely open when it comes to health matters. Medical practitioners can only use their extensive expertise to assist fully and effectively if they are properly appraised of the facts, otherwise their hands are tied. Not being so risks major issues occurring down the line. If a person, for example, is admitted to hospital in a state they cannot communicate in, then one of the biggest assets in the hospital's armoury to assist would be accurate medical records. The same reasoning applies to the importance of being honest with employers when it comes to health, as they cannot possibly make provision to accommodate for example increased needs if they are kept in the dark.

Secondly, that with physical resources at the limited level they now are, it is unfair to seek to prioritise them for personal gain without legitimate reasons for doing so, and important to use less resource intensive means for administrative tasks such as ordering repeat prescriptions and other renewals wherever these are advertised as available and are accessible.

That is not, of course, to say that doctors should not be consulted in person where a person and/or surgery feel this is merited or where a person's particular needs so dictate.
