We came across this useful little technique some time ago and have used it on a number of occasions with some success.

The idea is this.If someone is being unnecessarily aggressive or acting unreasonably towards you, then rather than being aggressive or unreasonable back, perform a bit of method acting.

Close everything out of your mind, then imagine – and we mean truly imagine - yourself as being simply a household mirror into which they are looking.

The notion being that by doing so, you become totally unperturbed, relaxed and echo back to the aggressor a powerful reflective indication of the futility and irrationality of their own conduct, resulting in it (hopefully) diluting or ceasing.

This is not unlike the ancient Samurai concept of ‘Mushin’.

That is effectively the highest state of Samurai in which the warrior is purportedly able to prevail in battle as a result of their motionless state of mind without moving a single muscle.

We are not suggesting this technique will work every time or that you ought not to defend yourself to the extent appropriate and permitted by Law.

But it has to be more favourable than entering into a pointless shouting match or worse.

And if nothing else, it enables the maintenance of dignity in the face of absurdity or caprice!

We hope this is of some use.
