Smart watches are a fantastic invention.

"Break Time Quickie - Keep Stressbusting™ Assets Visible" explains the reasons to keep such valuable tools close for a successful wellbeing regime.

And we fully endorse the inclusion of technological advances in an effective StressBusting armoury for reasons we illustrate in our post entitled "Embrace Technology to Stressbust™".

But they can encourage a level of professional athlete type obsession with statistics such as blood pressure, heart rate and estimated daily calorie consumption that do not necessarily take account of the individual or their particular circumstances.

This may, if taken to extremes, distort undermine wellness achievements against reasonable objectives and end up being more counter productive to everyday StressBusting™ than helpful.

After all, you can hardly "Create a Stressbusting™ Lifestyle you don’t “Need a Vacation” away from" or  ""Relax into the Dance of Life"", if you are checking your smart watch every 30 seconds for slight changes in our daily step total!

The risks as we see them of taking too much of an over encompassing approach to wellness are detailed in our post entitled "Avoid the “All Inclusive Breakfast Buffet” approach to Stressbusting™".

Whereas the benefits of a moderated approach are addressed in our post entitled "Variety may be the Spice of Life, but Moderation is the key to long term Wellness".

A reliable guide to the level of our own overall "wellness" can simply be how we "feel".

This is why, for example, we contact doctors as experts because we do not "feel" well, not because of any smart watch reading at a particular point in time. We imagine if the latter were the case, surgeries would be inundated with false emergencies!

A self calculation of our Stress Management Index can help an assessment of how we feel. We describe how to calculate SMI in our post entitled "Have an SMI™ (Stress Management Index™) to accompany your BMI".

So by all means use a smart watch as a means of keeping a periodical check on important statistics out of interest, but bear in mind that these will naturally vascillate from time to time for reasons in relation to which specialists report there is no need for undue concern or paranoia.

And ultimately, we as humans still remain better placed to intuitively assess our own wellbeing than gadgets - even smart ones!

NB: any wellness programme, particularly those involving strenuous exercise or a substantial dietary alteration, should not be undertaken if in doubt or in the case of a pre existing medical condition, without seeking the guidance of a qualified medical professional.

And always consult a regulated specialist if in any doubt or concern about health matters.
