Everyone who works acts in a particular way to maximise the value they add to that workplace, whatever their form of employment.
Training for work is traditionally provided to employees to drive efficiency and improve their skill sets both overall and at work, and employees are duly remunerated for their employment services.
But from a StressBusting™ perspective, it is important to feel able to leave work behind at the end of a day or shift, because otherwise lines can become blurred.
To give some examples, a lawyer who thinks in legal terms and constantly quotes and applies strict legal concepts at home will not have the versatility and empathy needed to participate in a family with kindness and understanding.
A philosophy professor who tries to find a deeper meaning for every family action, comment or thought given at home will miss out on so much spontaneity and create unnecessary complications.
And the teacher who insists on hands up from the rest of their family as a request to speak and scrutinises every apparent child misdemeanour risks creating an overtly rigid, less fluid home environment in which rebellion is more likely to prevail than compromise.
So, while sometimes difficult, particularly with the increased incidence of home work, it is nevertheless essential to “switch off’ from work mode and enjoy ‘home time’, as the latter requires a much more generalist, less specific approach than the more efficiency driven focus jobs naturally necessitate.
Because your friends and family need their and your homes to be a serene haven for them within which they can flourish without any over spill of a workplace based approach.
The key to the separation is putting some physical and emotional distance between work and home time.
A good walk can do this. Or reading a chapter of a book. Or perhaps doing a simple DIY task, cooking or spending quality time with children or pets. The examples are endless and individuals will know best what suits them - anything that you enjoy but is none work related can reinforce your ‘homing beacon’, so to speak.
If you are self employed or remote working for any reason, then some valuable tips as to how to create an effective work versus home time divide can be found in our post entitled "Break Time Quickie - 5 Stressbusting™ Pros & Cons of Remote Working".
And perhaps actively set about creating an atmosphere or ambience at home that itself encourages relaxation - our post entitled "10 Stressbusting™ Themes for Decorating to Innovate & Inspire" provides some real time examples of how to do this if of interest.
All of these simple steps will in their turn help improve level of home relaxation and aid a good night's sleep that is so important to both work and home life - see our post entitled ""Zzzzzz" - The Most Important Stressbusting™ Letter in the Alphabet!" for further context.
And if you fall back into work habits and modes of approach during home time which are not conducive to a stress free home life, just give them a positive mental validation, remind yourself that these are what make you a valued employer and workmate in the first place, then let them go until you need to re-engage them for work purposes.
